• The grain (originally a grain of barley) is the foundation for the traditional English weight systems, and is the only unit that is equal throughout the standard British/American system (avoirdupois), troy and apothecaries' systems of mass. In the standard British/American system, there are precisely 7,000 grains per pound, and 5,760 grains per troy pound or apothecaries' pound.
* Many antique powder-measures and weights are graded in dra(ch)ms. It is important to determine which system they adhere to - in the standard system, there are 27 11/32 gr per dram (dr), whereas an apothecaries' dram (Ʒ) is equal to 60 gr.
• Antique weights can be a fun way of measuring powder if you have a good scale. Keep your eyes open for old grain weights and other antique apothecaries' and mercantile weights. Although you need to be careful to determine the system for weights marked in drams, ounces or pounds, many others are still useful. A common type is the 'Pennyweight' (dwt), where 1 dwt = 24 gr. Some apothecaries' weights can also be of use, for example 1 scruple (Э), which equals 20 gr.
